In the mid-'90s, in the small town of Dundee, Scotland, a group of innovative minds at DMA Design (later Rockstar North) set out on an audacious mission: to redefine the gaming landscape. Led by David Jones, they embarked on creating a game that would not just break the mold but shatter it completely. Little did they know that their creation would change the gaming industry forever.

The year was 1997 when "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) made its debut. This top-down, open-world game allowed players to step into the shoes of a criminal navigating a sprawling city, engaging in missions, and, of course, stealing cars. The concept was revolutionary, granting players the freedom to choose their own paths and explore a dynamic, living world.

While the first installment laid the foundation, it was "Grand Theft Auto III" in 2001 that truly marked a paradigm shift. The game introduced a fully realized 3D open-world environment, immersing players in the chaotic, crime-ridden streets of Liberty City. For the first time, players could navigate a vast, seamless city, interact with a multitude of characters, and experience a narrative that unfolded in response to their choices.

"Grand Theft Auto III" wasn't just a game; it was an experience that blurred the lines between virtual and reality. Its unprecedented level of freedom and immersive storytelling captivated players and critics alike, setting a new standard for what was possible in video games.

Subsequent releases, such as "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" and "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," continued to push the boundaries. The series became synonymous with intricate narratives, morally ambiguous characters, and sprawling, lifelike cities that felt like virtual playgrounds. Each new installment built on the success of its predecessors, refining gameplay mechanics, expanding the scope of the worlds, and introducing groundbreaking features.

"Grand Theft Auto V," released in 2013, was the culmination of Rockstar's relentless pursuit of innovation. With a narrative intricately woven between three protagonists, players explored the vast expanse of Los Santos, a fictionalized version of Los Angeles. The game not only shattered sales records but further solidified GTA's impact on the gaming industry.

GTA V to literally everyone 10 years ago

GTA changed the gaming industry by proving that video games could be more than just linear experiences. They could be living, breathing worlds where players could shape their destinies, challenge societal norms, and immerse themselves in narratives rivaling those of film and literature. The series became a cultural phenomenon, sparking debates on the influence of video games on society and inspiring a new generation of game developers to think beyond the confines of traditional storytelling.

In essence, GTA's influence on the gaming industry lies in its ability to redefine what a video game could be—a dynamic, interactive, and immersive experience that goes beyond the screen and leaves a lasting impact on both players and the industry as a whole.

GTA V closely resembled the actual layout of Los Angeles, faithfully depicting the city's vibe. It seems like GTA VI is following suit, aiming to authentically recreate the lively essence of present-day Miami, Florida.
