A Look at the Iconic Mobile Game's Origins and Impact
The origins of the "Snake" game can be traced back to the arcade classic "Blockade," developed by Gremlin in 1976. The simple concept of the game involved navigating a line that grows in length, with the player controlling the direction to avoid collision with the wall or the snake’s own ever-extending body.
The game took a significant turn in 1997 when Taneli Armanto, a design engineer at Nokia, was tasked with developing a simple yet engaging game for the new Nokia 6110. Armanto transformed the classic arcade game into a format suitable for mobile phones. This version was called "Snake" and was included as a pre-installed game on Nokia devices.
"Snake" became a massive hit due to its simplicity and the widespread popularity of Nokia phones during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was a game that perfectly utilized the limited capabilities of early mobile devices, offering entertainment that was both accessible and challenging. The game’s appeal lay in its straightforward gameplay, making it addictive for users of all ages.
The technical aspect of "Snake" was relatively simple, involving merely the keypad of the phone to control the snake’s movements. As the snake ate apples on the screen, it grew longer, and the game increased in difficulty as the risk of running into the snake's own body grew.
